Dr. Shamin Eabenson Calls for Greater Awareness of Heat-Related Illnesses Among Future Healthcare Professionals
As climate change continues to intensify across the globe, heatwaves are becoming longer, more frequent, and increasingly dangerous. India, particularly states like Karnataka, experiences extreme summer temperatures every year, exposing millions of people to serious heat-related illnesses. While much attention is given to vulnerable populations, one group often overlooked is medical students, who spend long hours outdoors during community postings, family adoption programs, field surveys, and public health activities.
Recognizing this growing public health concern, Dr. Shamin Eabenson, MBBS, MD (Community Medicine) and Founder & Director of Eabenson Healthcare Private Limited, conducted an observational study to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to heat-related illnesses among medical students in North Karnataka. His research highlights the urgent need for better awareness, preparedness, and institutional support to protect future healthcare professionals from the harmful effects of extreme heat.
Climate Change is Creating New Healthcare Challenges
Heat-related illnesses range from mild conditions such as heat cramps and dehydration to life-threatening emergencies like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions can lead to dizziness, confusion, fainting, seizures, organ failure, and even death if not managed promptly.
Medical students are particularly vulnerable because community medicine training often requires prolonged outdoor exposure during health surveys, household visits, vaccination campaigns, and Family Adoption Program activities. Despite their medical education, many students may not be fully prepared to recognize or prevent heat-related illnesses while working in extreme weather conditions.
Research Highlights Awareness and Existing Gaps
To better understand this issue, Dr. Shamin Eabenson and his research team conducted a cross-sectional study involving 325 medical students from North Karnataka. The study assessed their knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding heat-related illnesses.
The findings revealed encouraging awareness in several areas. More than 83% of participants recognized that heat-related illnesses could cause fainting during fieldwork, while a similar percentage correctly identified cooling measures, fluid replacement, and immediate movement to a cooler environment as appropriate first aid for heat stroke. Over 80% of students were aware of common symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and muscle cramps, while 91% understood that sweating plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature.
The majority also identified heat stroke as the most dangerous heat-related illness, emphasizing their understanding of its potentially life-threatening consequences.
Knowledge Alone is Not Enough
Although students demonstrated good theoretical knowledge, the research identified several important gaps in practical preparedness.
Only about half of the participants reported receiving adequate guidance before outdoor field visits. Many students admitted they were not consistently prepared with emergency supplies such as fluids or first-aid resources, and preventive practices varied considerably during field activities. The study found that while 52% demonstrated good knowledge, only 31% showed a good attitude toward heat illness prevention, and practical preparedness remained inconsistent among many participants.
These findings suggest that awareness must be supported by structured training, institutional policies, and practical safety measures.
Building Safer Community-Based Medical Education
Dr. Shamin Eabenson emphasizes that medical education must evolve alongside changing environmental conditions. As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, educational institutions should integrate heat safety protocols into community medicine training.
Scheduling field visits during cooler hours, providing access to safe drinking water, encouraging protective clothing, ensuring transportation, supplying emergency medical kits, and educating students on early recognition of heat-related illnesses can significantly reduce health risks during community postings.
Such preventive strategies not only protect medical students but also prepare them to educate patients and communities about heat-related health risks in the future.

Beyond this research, Dr. Shamin Eabenson continues to promote preventive healthcare, climate-sensitive public health policies, and evidence-based medical education. His work reinforces the importance of preparing healthcare professionals for emerging environmental health challenges while strengthening community awareness.
